50 Cubes

Director of Activation · 2010–2011 · San Francisco

Director of Activation managing social platform, payment, and advertising integrations, and porting Flash character animation systems and assets to HTML5 canvas.

This was 2010-2011, when Flash was still central to browser games but HTML5 canvas was becoming the practical migration path. The engineering challenge was both product and platform: payments, social graph integrations, advertising hooks, and a runtime transition away from plugin-dependent animation. As Director of Activation, I led that transition end to end — three production systems shipped, replacing the studio's Flash-dependent pipeline with a browser-native one.

Overview

Social-game platform work during the Flash-to-HTML5 transition.

  • Runtime porting

Ported Flash animation and game behavior into JavaScript and HTML5 canvas.

  • Platform integrations

Built Facebook, payments, virtual currency, and advertising integrations for social games.

  • Engineering leadership

Led platform work, mentored engineers, and moved the team toward cloud-hosted browser runtimes.

Key projects

Selected work from the 50 Cubes years.

  1. Flash-to-HTML5 game runtime port

    Game platform

Ported Flash character animation systems and assets to HTML5 canvas as 50 Cubes moved from plugin-dependent to browser-native game delivery. Maintained ad, payment, and social integrations across the runtime transition, enabling seamless play across the growing ecosystem of platforms.

  2. Browser-native game platform architecture

    Cloud platform

Built service architecture for 50 Cubes' animated-character social games on AWS, integrating ads and payments across the platform. Led the migration from plugin-dependent game production to browser-native delivery, mentoring junior engineers throughout the transition.

About 50 Cubes

50 Cubes built animated-character social games during the peak of Facebook platform growth, mixing game mechanics, social distribution, virtual currency, and browser-based runtime constraints.
